I was 22 years old, newly married, waiting to move to Alabama for my husband’s first Army assignment (helicopter flight school).
I didn’t have a plan for work: we were moving to a small, rural military town—and at the time, my trade was print magazine design.
So—I did what any self-respecting creative would do: I started an Etsy shop 🙃
My shop (called Jen Davis Design, very creative I know) sold greeting cards and hand lettered prints (it was 2016, ok?).
It took a few months of drawing, scanning, printing, troubleshooting—and then crickets. 👀
People questioned me. I questioned me. Who was I, thinking that I could make a greeting card company that would actually sell something?!
Then—I heard it.
A small, cha-ching coming from my phone on my bedside table. 🥳
I had made my first ever sale. (To a stranger no less!)
That moment—that sound—has stuck with me for my entire career.
I also remember iterations of that moment:
✨ My first sale of a brand package to someone who found me through Instagram.
✨ My first time selling a brand/web package over $5k, and then $15k.
✨ My first time a student said YES to my first ever educational offer, my 1:1 mentorship program (that morphed into The Design Minimind).
Each time, it brought me back to that heart pounding, “I can’t believe it” feeling—and let me tell you, I am addicted to that feeling.
Blame it on my mastery of Roller Coaster Tycoon from back when I was a kid, but that’s when I caught the entrepreneurial bug.
And that addicting “I JUST MADE A SALE” feeling still hasn’t gone away.
If you’re a designer struggling with your business, “slogging through the mud” of positioning, marketing, sales, process, scaling, and trying to LIVE your life at the same time—I’ve got the answer.
The Design Minimind—my 1:1/small group program for designers wanting to make more, work less, and run their design business their way—will open doors for applications Nov. 1 of this year.
It has sold out 4x—last time in 4 days—so if you’re even a little bit curious about if it’s the right fit, drop your email HERE to get on the waitlist.
