Getting deep here—my “why” may not feel special, but it might surprise you.
There’s a lot of talk around “finding your why,” (the reason I continue running my business) especially in brand messaging and copywriting—and I’m here for it—but it can be a little overwhelming.
At face value, the reasons are pretty… boring? Normal?
But when I really dig deep and think about it, I could get those things from a full time job.
My real “why” goes so much deeper.
And it’s outlined beautifully in this quote from one of my favorite authors, John Mark Comer:
“If God’s glory is his presence and beauty, then, as I see it, we glorify God by reshaping the raw materials of the world in such a way that, for those with eyes to see, God’s presence and beauty are made visible.” – John Mark Comer, from Garden City
WOW.
My “why” actually deeply aligns with my faith—the most important part of my life.
As a designer, I see my work as a way to “reshape the raw materials of the world” (color, form, geometry, language, pixels, etc.) in such a way that it glorifies God.
This is why I’m driven to do what I do (design) in the way I do it (running my own studio). I could do this for someone else, but I wouldn’t be able to intertwine my faith and work in the intimate way that I’ve been able to recently. Here’s what that looks like:
This is my why. Getting to design WITHIN my faith, instead of AROUND it.
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” —Colossians 1:16
