If you’ve seen our work before, you know that Hello June loves creating monograms for most of our branding projects. Monograms are a great addition to a logo suite because of their versatility and ability to look beautiful at all sizes, especially when scaled down. Our clients typically use their monogram for their website favicon (the little graphic in the browser tab of your website!), email signature, letterhead, stickers, packaging, signage, and so much more.
Let’s rewind and talk a little bit more about monograms and their history. The concept of monograms can be traced back to when rulers and monarchs wanted to mark their possessions and official documents. The earliest known examples of monograms are the names of Greek cities on coins! Early monograms were also used as signatures by artists and craft workers, especially when guilds began regulating these areas.
Monograms eventually became a symbol of authority and prestige, signifying familial lineages. During the Industrial Revolution, the mass production of goods led to an increased need for branding, making monograms necessary and functional.
In the modern age, we started to see monograms being used as a way to identify a brand and make a memorable impression. Some of the most iconic brands of all time rely on their monograms to be identified and to elevate their perceived value (think Chanel’s “CC” and Louis Vuitton’s “LV”!) You also see monograms often in sports, as well as in logos for both small businesses and enterprise-level corporations.
When most people think of monograms, they might associate them with sophistication, royalty, elegance, and luxury, but that’s not always the case! Even in our playful, colorful and laidback branding projects we find ways to utilize monograms to diversify our clients’ logo suites, while staying true to the brand strategy we crafted at the beginning of our project.
Here are a few of our favorite monograms we’ve designed. If you’re looking to transform your brand into one that is strategic and memorable, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
