I’ve heard this phrase in countless cheesy movies: “It’s not personal, it’s just business.”
I wholeheartedly disagree.
Clearly none of these people are small business owners (because there aren’t that many things more personal to me than my business and the brands I create for my clients).
A solid, professionally-designed brand will display who you are, differentiate you from competitors, elevate your perceived value (to justify those minimum price points!) and attract the right (and weed out the wrong) clients.
But how do you know if you’ve found the right fit? Follow my top three ways to vet a brand designer.
Find Someone You Trust
Trust forms the foundation of any successful partnership especially when it comes to brand design. Do some self-assessment during brand designer search. Are you someone who is able to trust your teammates wholeheartedly, do you love collaborating, are you ready to hand over the reigns to the person who’s the right fit (and do you feel a sense of trust with them during your initial consult?) This gut check will help you determine fit for your project.
Make Sure Your Aesthetics Align
We hear it all the time from potential clients, “I’ll know it when I see it.” This is often a red flag for us—because it tells us that they don’t have a good understanding of the style they want for their brand. Before you inquire, peruse the designer’s portfolio and look for examples of the exact style you’re after—when you fall in love with their work, chances are it’s the right fit.
Dig Into Their Industry Experience
At Hello June, we specialize in working with creative service providers, more specifically those in the luxury home space like high-end interior designers, fine artists, furnishings and decor brands, and architects/builders. If you’re on a discovery call with a designer and they’re speaking your language, have specific examples of past clients in your market (with great results!), and clearly specialize in your industry, you’ve found your person.
