In a social media centric world, it’s easier than ever to fall into the trap of a comparison mindset. Everyone is sharing their most curated selves, achievements, projects, and it’s natural to find yourself comparing your life to highlight reels on Instagram. Here are a few tips to break free from the cycle and reframe a comparison mindset:
Tip #1: Reduce the noise around you. If you’re operating in a world that feels too noisy (social media, colleagues with strong opinions, the endless content train that you can’t stop scrolling), odds are you’re surrounded by voices and opinions that aren’t your own. Don’t be afraid to unfollow or mute voices around you that cause you to second-guess your own talent, abilities, or success.
Tip #2: When everyone zigs, give yourself permission to zag. If you’re noticing patterns in the industry (in terms of design style, content, etc.), then allow yourself to trust your own taste and ideas, and dare to create something different. We all have our own unique sets of strengths and talents, so hone in on what makes you special and allow it to shine.
Tip #3: Reconnect with your own inner creativity. Outside of the digital world, what inspires you? It could be browsing packaging at Target, trying out trendy new coffee shops, or reading books about design (and buying, my fav place to get design books is Counter Print!) It’s easy to gravitate towards trends and patterns of creative work on Pinterest, but by finding your inspiration elsewhere, your work will be authentic and distinct.
Tip #4: Trust that you have time. My comparison mindset manifests as an anxiety that I haven’t come “far enough” compared to where (some of) my peers are in their businesses. Shifting that worry into a deep sense of self-trust (through positive self-talk, uplifting sticky notes, a reminder on your phone, or an encouraging chat with a friend or family member) will help you celebrate the season you’re in without that nagging “not enough” feeling. You can also do a self-love exercise where you write down a list of negative thoughts you tell yourself, and then rewrite each thought to reflect on how you are capable of overcoming that negativity.
